The Madaba Map is the oldest detailed cartographic document in the world. Made about the year 565 CE from more than two million colored stone cubes.
It is estimated that 2,300,000 cubes were used, and that it would have taken 11,500 hours to lay the mosaic.
The Madaba Map is part of a mosaic tile floor in St. George's Orthodox Church in Madaba, Jordan. It is the oldest extant map of the Holy Land and is dated to the middle of the 6th century AD. It was discovered late in the 19th century, during an excavation and reconstruction of the mosaic floor. The current church was built in 1896 over the remains of a Byzantine church, which is believed to have been built at the end of 6th or at the beginning of 7th century A.D.
The mosaic is a detailed map of the entire Holy Land, including the Nile Delta. The central element is a large depiction of Jerusalem as it appeared at the height of the Byzantine period. The map depicts some famous Old City structures such as the Damascus Gate, St. Steven's Gate Also called Lions' Gate, the Golden Gate , the gate leading to Mount Zion, the Citadel (Tower of David), the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Cardo Maximus.
